Stretch marks are the silvery scars often found in the hips, breasts, highs, buttocks, and abdomen as a result of rapid growth, weight gain, or pregnancy. When tissue under the skin experiences sudden changes, collagen production is disrupted causing what we know as stretch marks. Fortunately, today’s market of cosmetic procedures offers a variety options for treating those unsightly scars:
Stretch Mark Removal Option #1: Microdermabrasion - This procedure involves a microderm machine that pumps a steam saturated with crystals at the affected area. Although this procedure cannot eliminate extensive scarring, it does help with the removal of fine lines. While not the most powerful of treatments, Microdermabrasion is considered to be the safest.
Stretch Mark Removal Option #2: Topical Cream - Used solely, topical creams are most effective on mild and recent stretch marks. For more prominent results, we recommend that patients use creams such as StriVectin®, Zenmed® Stretta, and Trilastin® in conjunction with Microdermabrasion or laser treatments.
Stretch Mark Removal Option #3: Laser Treatments - The main function of this procedure is to stimulate the production of collagen in the deep layers of skin. There are two types of lasers to accomplish this goal. The CO2 laser is most successful at removing deep wrinkles as well as recent stretch marks. Laser Skin Rejuvenation penetrates deep into the skin to help the production of collagen. This process is especially gentle but may not be as effective in removing stubborn stretch marks. Both treatments are effective method for treating mild to moderate stretch marks, but neither procedure can completely remove the appearance of severe stretch marks.
